Unleaded fuel prices decline while diesel prices increase amid expert warnings

Fuel excise relief is beginning to impact petrol prices in Perth, with unleaded fuel dropping to an average of 222.9 cents per litre from 226.3 cents. Liberty in Beckenham is currently the only station offering unleaded fuel below $2 per litre, while diesel prices have risen to an average of 305.5 cents per litre. This adjustment follows a decision by state and territory leaders to allocate $400 million from GST revenue due to rising fuel prices, enabling the Albanese Government to cut fuel excise by 32 cents. However, experts warn that this relief may be temporary, with petrol prices likely to rebound to around $2.50 or higher shortly after the initial drop. Additionally, concerns about fuel supply persist, as many stations are reporting shortages, particularly of diesel, while Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen assures that supply is improving.

Why It Matters

The current fluctuation in fuel prices is significant due to its direct impact on the cost of living for consumers. Historically, fuel prices in Australia have hovered around 160 cents per litre, with recent conflicts affecting global oil supply and pricing. The government’s decision to cut fuel excise is a response to the economic pressure felt by households, aiming to alleviate some of the financial burden. The increase in GST revenue, driven by higher fuel prices, complicates this situation, as state leaders may need to reassess their strategies if prices spike again.
