Toronto student denied bail in Pakistan over social media posts

Hamza Ahmed Khan, a dual Canadian-Pakistani PhD student at the University of Toronto, has been denied bail after his arrest in Pakistan for alleged violations of the 2016 Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act. Detained since February 21, Khan’s family claims he was conducting research on democracy in Muslim-majority societies when he went missing. The court cited serious concerns over the dissemination of inflammatory content online, while his family argues that his critical social media posts should not warrant imprisonment.
