Uninsured learner driver ran off after killing woman in head-on crash

A learner driver, Khizer Ali, 24, was sentenced to over 11 years in prison for causing the death of Valerie Ayres, 65, and serious injuries to her husband, David, 70, in a head-on collision in Redditch on April 23 last year. Ali, who only held a provisional license and lacked insurance, was speeding at 59mph in a 40mph zone when the crash occurred, after a reckless drive that included near misses and disregard for traffic laws. His sister, Sanaa Shahzad, also pleaded guilty for her role in the incident by permitting Ali to drive the uninsured vehicle.
