Minister Daryl Vaz has confirmed that power has been restored across Jamaica after a rare islandwide outage that occurred overnight. The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) reported that the blackout began at 9pm local time on Friday and affected all 700,000 customers. By Saturday morning, 500,000 customers had their power restored, with the remaining expected to be back online soon. Minister Vaz and Prime Minister Holness both deemed the situation as “unacceptable” and called for a full report from JPS on the cause of the outage.

Why It Matters

Jamaica’s rare islandwide power outage has raised concerns about the country’s electrical grid resilience, especially as it coincides with the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. The government’s demand for a report from JPS within 24 hours indicates a strong response to the incident. The blackout serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure to prevent widespread disruptions in the future.
