UN calls for release of Gaza doctor amid reports of severe torture

United Nations experts are urging Israel to release Dr Hussam Abu Safia, a Palestinian physician from Gaza, who has reportedly been subjected to severe torture and denied critical medical treatment while in Israeli detention. Abu Safia, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arrested in December 2024 during Israel’s attacks on Gaza and has been held without charge or trial. The UN special rapporteurs Tlaleng Mofokeng and Ben Saul have raised concerns about his deteriorating health condition and the violations of his human rights. Gaza’s healthcare system has been severely impacted by Israeli attacks, with over 930 attacks on the sector since October 2023, leading to damage to all hospitals and the targeting of healthcare workers.

Why It Matters

The case of Dr Hussam Abu Safia highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where healthcare facilities and workers continue to be targeted during conflicts with Israel. The systematic denial of medical treatment to Abu Safia and the broader impact on Gaza’s healthcare system underscore the urgent need for international intervention to ensure the protection of medical personnel and access to essential healthcare services in the region. The situation also raises concerns about the human rights violations faced by Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody and the need for accountability and justice in cases of torture and ill treatment.
