UN chief sees ‘flame of hope’ in Syria, calls for end to Israel strikes

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed optimism for Syria’s future post-Assad regime but warned of challenges ahead, urging Israel to cease its airstrikes as violations of Syria’s sovereignty. Guterres also called for the withdrawal of military forces from the UN buffer zone and suggested a first gesture towards easing sanctions on Syria to show solidarity with the Syrian people amidst the transition of power to the Islamist HTS movement.
