What You Need to Know
• The International Organization for Migration estimates that over 300,000 workers are employed in scam centres across South-East Asia.
• Victims from more than 80 countries are lured into these operations through fraudulent job offers on social media.
• The UN Office on Drugs and Crime reported global losses from online scams reached between $88 billion and $114 billion last year.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope announced that human trafficking through online scam centres has become one of the fastest-growing forms of trafficking globally. Victims from over 80 countries, including educated job seekers, are deceived by fraudulent job offers primarily targeting older individuals in Western nations. These scam centres, located in countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, employ approximately 300,000 workers who often face severe abuse and coercion. Pope highlighted that the IOM has assisted more than 3,500 survivors from 33 countries, many of whom return home traumatized and in debt. She emphasized the need for stronger cross-border cooperation and public awareness to combat these trafficking networks effectively.

Why It Matters

This issue is significant as it highlights the growing sophistication of human trafficking methods, particularly through online platforms. The IOM’s findings underscore the vulnerability of educated individuals to scams, revealing a troubling trend in global labor exploitation. With annual losses from these operations reaching between $88 billion and $114 billion, the economic impact is substantial. Addressing this problem requires coordinated international efforts to protect potential victims and dismantle the networks that exploit them.
