The UK plans to boost its armed forces by offering paid “gap years” to teenagers, aiming to increase recruitment among young people amid growing Russian threats. The Ministry of Defence will initially open the scheme to 150 applicants aged 18 to 25, with hopes to expand to over 1,000 annually. Recruits will undergo basic training for two years in the army, one year in the navy, and options are being considered for the Royal Air Force. The UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff has emphasized the need for readiness in the face of Russian aggression, with cyber-attacks and hybrid threats intensifying.
