Parliament committee supports social media ban for under-16s, MP expresses embarrassment

The MP who launched an inquiry into the impact of social media on youth has disagreed with its recommendations, including a proposed ban on social media for children under 16. Dr Parmjeet Parmar, of the Act party, also opposes the suggestion to ban “nudify” applications, advocating instead for criminalizing the action itself. The committee’s report calls for an independent national online safety regulator and better regulation of social media algorithms and alcohol advertising aimed at young people.
