Supermarkets across the UK have announced their opening hours for Easter 2026, with Good Friday on April 3, Easter Sunday on April 5, and Easter Monday on April 6. Most large supermarkets, including Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, and Sainsbury’s, will be closed on Easter Sunday as required by law in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while stores in Scotland will remain open. On Easter Monday, these supermarkets will operate with shorter hours. Smaller chains such as Lidl and Co-op will have varying hours, with many locations open throughout the holiday period. Shoppers are advised to check local store timings to avoid any inconvenience.
Why It Matters
The regulation requiring large supermarkets to close on Easter Sunday has a historical basis in the UK’s Sunday trading laws, which aim to protect family time and promote a work-life balance. The significant variation in store hours across regions, especially between Scotland and the rest of the UK, reflects differing cultural and legal attitudes toward shopping on religious holidays. The Easter holiday period is crucial for retailers, as it can lead to increased sales for seasonal items such as chocolates and gifts, emphasizing the importance of clear communication about opening hours for consumer planning.
