Intervention follows a breakdown in talks between the UK government and British Steel’s Chinese owner, Jingye Group.
The UK government has intervened to take control of British Steel amid failed negotiations with its Chinese owner, Jingye Group, over transitioning to greener production, threatening 3,500 jobs. Legislation passed quickly allows the state to manage operations and secure necessary resources as the company faces daily losses of $915,600. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds warned that a full nationalization is likely, emphasizing the need to protect jobs and ensure the UK does not become reliant on foreign steel.
