What You Need to Know
• The United Kingdom proposed a social media curfew for 16- and 17-year-olds from midnight to 6am.
• Users will be allowed to bypass the restrictions on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
• The initiative follows a June announcement of a blanket ban on social media for children under 16, effective in 2027.

The United Kingdom’s Secretary for Online Safety Kanishka Narayan announced a proposed overnight social media curfew for older teenagers on July 16, 2026. This plan includes a six-hour lockout from midnight to 6am for users aged 16 and 17 on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Additionally, features like autoplay videos and infinite scrolling will be disabled by default to promote better sleep and focus. This initiative follows a previous announcement by outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who introduced a ban on social media for children under 16, set to take effect in 2027. The UK’s approach aligns with a global trend, as Australia implemented a similar ban for under-16s in December 2025.

Why It Matters

This proposal is part of the UK government’s broader strategy to address digital harm among minors, particularly in light of increasing concerns about social media’s impact on youth. The initiative reflects a growing trend among countries to regulate children’s access to social media, with Australia serving as a notable example. The UK’s approach aims to balance protection with personal responsibility, as officials cite data showing that many teenagers may adhere to voluntary restrictions. As digital engagement continues to rise, these measures underscore the ongoing debate about the role of social media in adolescent development and well-being.
