Naheed Ejaz, a 61-year-old former Labour mayor of Bracknell, has been sentenced to three years in prison for perverting the course of justice. Ejaz was found guilty of aiding her son, Diwan Khan, in concealing evidence after he raped a 15-year-old girl who was unconscious. The court heard that Ejaz delayed police access to their home for over a minute and communicated in Urdu with her son to help him hide his phone, which contained incriminating footage of the assault. A judge condemned her actions, stating that she prioritized protecting her son over the victim, an underage girl. Khan received a 12-year prison sentence for his crime.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the severe implications of obstructing justice in sexual assault cases, particularly involving minors. The victim’s life was profoundly affected, leading to mental health struggles and academic failures following the attack. The actions of Ejaz not only hindered law enforcement but also perpetuated a culture of silence surrounding sexual violence, which can prevent victims from seeking justice. This incident underscores the critical need for accountability in cases of sexual violence and the importance of supporting victims in their recovery and pursuit of justice.
