The UK has dropped 22 places in the Rainbow Map and Index, ranking 22nd out of 49 countries in LGBTQ+ rights, marking ten consecutive years of decline. ILGA-Europe cites a recent Supreme Court ruling defining ‘woman’ based on biological sex, which hampers legal recognition of trans individuals, as a significant factor in this fall. The UK scored 45.65%, above the European average but below the EU average, with concerns also raised about the lack of a conversion therapy ban and issues surrounding LGBTQ+ asylum rights, prompting calls for government action to protect trans rights.
