UK Court Holds BHP Responsible for Samarco Dam Disaster
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mining giant BHP faces potential billions in compensation after a UK court ruled it liable for the 2015 Samarco dam disaster in Brazil, which killed 19 and polluted the Doce River. High Court Justice Finola O’Farrell stated the disaster was foreseeable due to warning signs of instability. Claimants seek $72 billion in damages, although BHP plans to appeal the ruling, arguing it has already compensated affected communities in Brazil. Following the decision, BHP’s shares fell 2% in London.
