Cook Islands fisherman recounts week-long ordeal lost at sea

A Cook Islands fisherman, Apiuta Apiuta, also known as Pone, was rescued after spending a week lost at sea. He was cast out of his dinghy twice due to severe storms and rough seas while fishing near Pukapuka, a small island in the Cook Islands. Last Thursday, he was discovered by a New Zealand Defence Force aircraft and subsequently rescued by the crew of a Taiwanese fishing vessel. Before returning home, Apiuta visited relatives in Auckland, where he recounted the harrowing experience, which began after a day of volleyball on the island’s sandy shores.
