Foodstuffs opens $70 million chilled goods centre in Māngere

Foodstuffs North Island is developing New Zealand’s largest frozen and chilled food distribution center, known as Project Igloo, which will significantly enhance the region’s storage capacity. According to Chris Quin, the chief executive of Foodstuffs North Island, the facility will more than double the upper North Island’s capacity for these goods, supporting the supply of essential items such as ice cream, frozen vegetables, and yogurts to local stores. The construction site is being toured by key executives, including Quin, along with property head Nick Hanson and senior development manager David Boersen. This investment aims to ensure that suppliers can efficiently deliver products to the co-operative’s Pak’nSave, New World, and Four Square store chains, thereby improving supply chain reliability.

Why It Matters

This development is significant as it addresses the growing demand for frozen and chilled food products in New Zealand, particularly in the upper North Island, where such storage facilities are crucial. The increase in capacity will not only enhance supply chain efficiency for Foodstuffs but also support local suppliers by improving product availability in stores. Historically, the co-operative has played a vital role in the New Zealand grocery sector, and this expansion underscores its commitment to maintaining a robust supply network amid increasing consumer preferences for frozen and chilled goods. The investment aligns with broader trends in the food distribution industry, where enhanced logistics capabilities are essential for meeting evolving market demands.
