Two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler jets collided during an aerial demonstration at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show in Mountain Home, Idaho, on Sunday. The incident occurred around 12:10 p.m. MDT, with both aircraft assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 out of Whidbey Island, Washington. All four crew members ejected safely and were assessed by medical personnel at the scene. Eyewitnesses captured dramatic footage of the collision, which showed the jets crashing and subsequently exploding, sending thick black smoke into the air. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the crash site, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Why It Matters

Military aviation incidents such as this highlight the risks associated with flight demonstrations, especially involving advanced aircraft like the EA-18G Growler, which is designed for electronic warfare. The Growler is part of the F/A-18 Super Hornet family and plays a crucial role in the Navy’s airborne electronic attack capabilities. Historically, air shows have seen accidents, underscoring the importance of safety protocols and pilot training in high-stakes environments. The swift response of emergency crews and the successful ejections of the pilots in this incident emphasize ongoing safety measures in military aviation operations.
