An illegal immigrant from Mexico, Eri Otoniel Roblero Perez, has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after a crash that resulted in the deaths of two young boys in South Carolina. The incident occurred when Perez allegedly swerved off the road and struck 12-year-old Dereon James Robinson and 9-year-old Mikhail-Lee Smith as they were riding their bikes on a sidewalk. Both boys succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. In addition to felony DUI charges, Perez faces charges for driving with an open container and without a license. The Department of Homeland Security has issued an immigration detainer for Perez, who is currently being held without bond at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

Why It Matters

This case highlights ongoing debates surrounding immigration enforcement and public safety, particularly concerning illegal immigrants who commit crimes. According to the Department of Homeland Security, incidents like this case raise concerns about the consequences of undocumented immigrants engaging in dangerous activities, such as driving under the influence. Nationally, DUI offenses contribute significantly to traffic-related fatalities, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of laws against impaired driving. The tragic loss of young lives in this incident underscores the impact of these issues on families and communities.
