Two Japanese boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, died from brain injuries sustained in separate bouts on the same card at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. Kotari, 28, died after a 12-round draw and subsequent surgery, while Urakawa, also 28, passed away following a knockout loss, prompting the Japanese Boxing Commission to reduce OPBF title bouts from 12 to 10 rounds.
