Two Alberta private surgery clinic contracts in limbo amid allegations

Alberta’s health ministry is still deliberating on the status of proposed private surgery clinics in Red Deer and Lethbridge, amidst allegations of government corruption. The clinics were intended to reduce wait lists for surgeries under the public health plan. Former head of Alberta Health Services, Athana Mentzelopoulos, has filed a wrongful dismissal suit, claiming pressure to sign off on contracts despite cost concerns and ownership confusion. The allegations are being investigated by the government and Alberta’s auditor general.
