A Tufts University student from Turkey, Rumeysa Ozturk, returned to Boston after being released from a Louisiana immigration detention center, where she spent over six weeks following her arrest linked to an op-ed criticizing her university’s response to Israel and the Gaza conflict. A federal judge ordered her release, citing a lack of evidence for her detention and recognizing her as not being a danger or flight risk, while Ozturk expressed gratitude for support and is determined to continue her case regarding potential violations of her rights. Ozturk’s student visa was revoked following claims of her actions undermining U.S. foreign policy, amid allegations of supporting Hamas, which she denies.
