Turkey played a significant role in the downfall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by providing support to rebel groups fighting Assad’s regime. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cut ties with Assad in 2011 and put intelligence and military resources behind the opposition. Turkey opened its doors to the largest number of Syrian refugees, many of whom were linked with opposition groups. However, as Assad gained the upper hand in the civil war with the help of Russia and Iran, Turkey faced domestic, economic, and security challenges along its border with Syria.
