The B.C. Geographical Names Office is considering removing the name “Trutch” from four locations due to Joseph Trutch’s racist legacy as B.C.’s first lieutenant-governor, known for oppressive policies against Indigenous peoples. The sites under review include Mount Trutch, Trutch Island, Trutch, B.C., and Trutch Creek, following a request received in August 2021. The province is engaging with local governments and First Nations to gather feedback until March 6, before making a decision. Previous renamings include a Vancouver street changed to honor the Musqueam First Nation.
