Trump announces completion of Reflecting Pool work, ready for water filling

President Donald Trump’s renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been completed, with plans to fill it with water by Sunday. The basin, freshly painted a shade dubbed “American flag blue,” was finished on Wednesday, although as of early Thursday, it remained empty. Trump initially estimated the renovation cost at $1.5 million to $2 million, but contracts awarded for the project total at least $14.8 million. The reflecting pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is a historic site where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Critics argue that the focus on such projects distracts from pressing national issues, and a nonprofit has even filed a lawsuit to halt the renovation, claiming the new color resembles a “theme park.”

Why It Matters

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, completed in the 1920s, is an iconic structure in Washington, D.C., holding about 6.5 million gallons of water. It underwent a significant renovation in 2012, which included improvements to its water sourcing and filtration system. The current renovation has raised concerns regarding the allocation of public funds, particularly in light of ongoing drought conditions affecting Washington and surrounding areas. The project has also sparked debates about the preservation of historical landmarks and the appropriateness of changes to their aesthetics.
