Trump administration limits agency focused on American healthcare safety

The Trump administration has significantly reduced the activities of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), limiting federal funding that has historically improved medical practices and saved lives. AHRQ announced the suspension of at least 104 grants, primarily focused on patient safety, despite Congress allocating $345 million to the agency for the fiscal year. So far, less than $15 million has been spent on grants, and no new grants have been issued in over a year. The agency has seen a substantial staff reduction, with approximately 75% of employees leaving since President Trump’s inauguration. Critics argue that the administration’s cuts are detrimental, particularly given AHRQ’s role in addressing critical healthcare issues such as medical errors and patient safety.

Why It Matters

AHRQ has played a crucial role in enhancing patient safety and quality of care in the U.S. healthcare system for nearly three decades. Research funded by AHRQ has led to significant improvements, including a reduction in hospital-acquired infections, which saved an estimated 20,500 lives and $7.7 billion in healthcare costs from 2014 to 2017. Additionally, AHRQ’s initiatives have influenced healthcare practices by integrating patient perspectives through standardized surveys. The agency’s closure and funding cuts threaten the continuity of these essential healthcare improvements and could reverse progress made in patient safety and quality care.
