The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating potential voter fraud in Michigan’s Wayne County, as announced by Harmeet Dhillon, U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. The investigation follows reports of fraudulent voting and violations of the Help America Vote Act. Concurrently, the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) disclosed that around 34,000 deceased individuals were identified on the state’s voter rolls after a data comparison with a federal database. While NCSBE Executive Director Sam Hayes emphasized that finding deceased individuals does not necessarily imply illegal voting, he acknowledged the need for thorough verification to ensure eligible voters are on the rolls. The NCSBE plans to collaborate with county boards to remove ineligible names, which reflects ongoing efforts to maintain accurate voter registration lists amid scrutiny from the Trump administration regarding election integrity.

Why It Matters

The investigation into voter fraud in Michigan and the findings in North Carolina highlight ongoing national concerns about election integrity and the accuracy of voter registration lists. With federal laws mandating the removal of ineligible voters, states are increasingly utilizing cross-referencing with federal databases to identify discrepancies. Historical challenges in maintaining accurate voter rolls have led to scrutiny from various political entities, with significant implications for electoral processes. In North Carolina, the biennial maintenance program has previously removed hundreds of thousands of ineligible voters, underscoring the importance of accurate voter registration in upholding democratic practices.
