President Donald Trump expressed his belief that the U.S. will annex Greenland for international security, despite Denmark and Greenland’s lack of interest, during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Rutte, while diplomatically avoiding the topic, agreed with Trump’s emphasis on security in the Arctic region. The U.S. and Denmark currently have a defense agreement allowing American military presence on the island, though the Danish and Greenlandic governments have stated that Greenland is not for sale.
