The Trump administration has decided to drop charges against U.S. Army veteran Jan “Jay” Carey, who burned a flag in protest of an executive order signed by President Trump. Carey faced two misdemeanor charges related to fire safety after he set a U.S. flag alight in Lafayette Park on August 25, shortly after the executive order was issued. The Supreme Court has historically upheld flag burning as protected free speech, a point Carey emphasized in his defense against what he called a “vindictive prosecution.”
