Tropical Storm Dolphin made landfall in eastern China on Sunday, bringing heavy rain and winds of 151 kph (93 mph) to Taizhou in Zhejiang province. As of Monday, the storm had weakened to sustained winds of 65 kph (40 mph) and was moving northwest at 15 to 20 kph (9 to 12 mph), according to the Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. Authorities have warned residents of potential severe flooding and landslides, prompting preemptive evacuations of over 300,000 people. In Zhejiang, rescue efforts are underway in Yueqing, where officials are searching for individuals trapped in flooded homes. Meanwhile, the storm has also contributed to intensified monsoon rains in the Philippines, leading to additional flooding and landslides. Concurrently, Tropical Storm Chan-hom is approaching Japan’s Pacific coast and is expected to strengthen before landfall.

Why It Matters

Tropical Storm Dolphin’s impact highlights the increasing frequency and intensity of tropical storms in East Asia, a trend linked to climate change. Historical data indicates that the region has seen an uptick in severe weather patterns, leading to increased risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas. The preemptive measures taken, such as evacuations and flight cancellations, underscore the importance of preparedness in mitigating the effects of such natural disasters. Additionally, the storm’s influence on the weather in the Philippines adds to the broader regional implications of severe weather events, affecting agriculture, infrastructure, and public safety across multiple nations.
