A trespasser was killed after being sucked into a Frontier Airlines plane’s engine at Denver International Airport while it was preparing for takeoff. The individual jumped the airport fence and was struck by Flight 4345, which was set to depart for Los Angeles. This incident triggered an engine fire and prompted the evacuation of the 224 passengers and seven crew members on board. The pilot reported to the control tower that they had hit someone on the runway, leading to smoke entering the cabin. Following the evacuation, 12 passengers sustained minor injuries, with five requiring hospitalization. The National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the incident, which temporarily closed the runway where the accident occurred.

Why It Matters

Airport safety protocols are critical in preventing accidents like this, which not only endanger lives but also disrupt operations. The incident highlights the need for stringent perimeter security measures to deter unauthorized access to runways. In recent years, there have been several incidents involving trespassers at airports, raising concerns about the effectiveness of existing security systems. The investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board will likely address these vulnerabilities and aim to improve safety standards in aviation.
