Transport Canada initiates survey on LED headlight glare

Transport Canada has initiated a survey to assess the impact of increasingly bright LED headlights on driving safety and visibility. The agency recognizes that while LED headlights enhance visibility for drivers, they can create significant glare for other road users. The anonymous survey, which is open to Canadians aged 16 and older until April 20, aims to gather insights on how headlight glare affects various modes of transportation, including driving, walking, and cycling. Participants are asked about their experiences with glare and the factors contributing to it. Experts note that the intensity and color of LED headlights can disturb other drivers’ vision, especially on modern vehicles with higher mounting positions, which can direct light into the eyes of oncoming traffic.

Why It Matters

This initiative highlights ongoing concerns about road safety related to evolving vehicle technologies. The prevalence of bright LED headlights has increased, particularly with the rise of SUVs and trucks, which accounted for nearly 87% of new vehicle sales in 2024. As driving conditions at night can be challenging, understanding the effects of glare is crucial for developing regulations that enhance road safety for all users. Previous studies have shown that glare can significantly impair visibility, leading to potential accidents, making this survey an important step in addressing these issues effectively.
