Transgender Women Excluded from Women’s PDC Darts Competitions

The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) has implemented an immediate ban on transgender women from participating in women’s events, stating that only biological females are eligible for competition under its regulations. This decision follows a review of the DRA’s Trans and Gender Diverse Policy, which began in 2025. Noa-Lynn van Leuven, the first transgender woman to compete in the PDC World Championship in 2024, expressed that this ruling has “effectively retired” her from women’s darts. Despite this, she remains eligible for open tournaments that include all players. The DRA’s ruling is supported by a report from Dr. Emma Hilton, which indicated that small physiological advantages in darts could accumulate to provide a competitive edge for male players. This follows similar actions by other sporting organizations, including the World Darts Federation and the International Olympic Committee.

Why It Matters

The decision by the Darts Regulation Authority reflects a broader trend in sports regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes. In recent years, several sports organizations have reevaluated their policies in light of ongoing debates about fairness and competition. The DRA’s ruling aligns with previous decisions made by the World Darts Federation and the IOC, which banned transgender women from female events, citing concerns over competitive balance. As the conversation around gender identity and sports continues to evolve, this ruling could have far-reaching implications for athletes and the future of gender-segregated competitions.
