Train Collision with Elephants in Assam
Seven wild Asiatic elephants, including four calves, were killed when a high-speed train struck a herd in Assam, India. The train driver attempted to brake, but the train derailed, causing no human casualties among the 650 passengers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sadness and called for an inquiry, noting that such accidents are not uncommon in the region, which has a high elephant population. Since 2020, over 79 elephants have reportedly died from train collisions in Assam.
