Trailing Trump in Polls, Biden Can Be More Bullish in One Battleground
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Across most of the battleground states, President Biden’s re-election campaign is facing challenges like worrisome polling, criticism for a slow ramp-up, and calls from Democrats to address the threat posed by former President Donald J. Trump. However, in Wisconsin, the situation is different.

President Biden is set to visit Milwaukee on Wednesday to visit his state campaign headquarters, where he doesn’t need to build a re-election apparatus from scratch. Local Democrats in Wisconsin have maintained a strong organizing network since the 2020 presidential campaign, which continued through the 2022 midterm elections and a 2023 State Supreme Court contest.

Unlike in other battleground states where Democrats are still explaining the importance of the 2024 election, Wisconsin Democrats already understand the difference between winning and losing. After years of being out of power, facing restrictive legislation, and experiencing sudden changes in laws, Wisconsin Democrats are acutely aware of the stakes.

President Biden has made several visits to Wisconsin, and Vice President Kamala Harris has also been to the state multiple times. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin has opened 44 offices throughout the state, and canvass kickoff events are set to begin soon.

In Wisconsin, issues like abortion rights and democracy have been central to the political discourse, aligning with President Biden’s campaign focus. Polling shows that President Biden has a lead on these issues in Wisconsin compared to other battleground states.

While Republicans in Wisconsin contested President Biden’s victory in 2020, and efforts were made to question the validity of the election, recent surveys show a close race between President Biden and former President Trump. However, issues like abortion rights and the economy are still crucial factors for Wisconsin voters.

Abortion is a significant issue in Wisconsin, especially after a sudden ban in 2022 following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Democrats have campaigned on this issue, emphasizing the role of conservatives in the ban.

Despite challenges like declining turnout and enthusiasm among Black voters in Wisconsin, Democrats are hopeful that recent victories by Black Democrats in local elections will help energize and mobilize these communities.

Overall, Wisconsin Democrats are well-organized and prepared for the upcoming election, with a strong focus on key issues that resonate with voters in the state.
