Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled a new U.S. trailer for the critically acclaimed Scottish drama I Swear, which recently garnered three major BAFTA Awards. The film, directed by Kirk Jones, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and achieved unexpected success in the UK, topping the box office. I Swear tells the true story of John Davidson, a teenager in 1980s Britain whose life changes dramatically after developing Tourette’s syndrome at age 15. Robert Aramayo, known for his role as Elrond in The Rings of Power, stars as John, earning the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his performance. The film is set to hit select U.S. theaters on April 24, 2026, and explores themes of resilience, belonging, and personal growth through John’s journey after he meets a woman named Dottie, who helps him navigate his struggles.
Why It Matters
I Swear highlights the challenges faced by individuals with Tourette’s syndrome, a neurological disorder that was poorly understood in the 1980s. By depicting the personal journey of John Davidson, the film raises awareness about the condition and the importance of empathy and support for those affected. The real John Davidson previously created the documentary John’s Not Mad in 1989, which aimed to educate the public about Tourette’s syndrome during a time of significant stigma and misunderstanding. This film not only acknowledges the historical context of disability awareness but also emphasizes the ongoing need for greater understanding and acceptance in society.
