Helene, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday night with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. The storm’s eye hit about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida, moving quickly inland and reaching southern Georgia as a Category 2 hurricane by 1 a.m. Friday. Forecasters warned of its “extremely dangerous” status as it continued to impact the region with strong winds and heavy rainfall.
