Tourist detained after visiting isolated tribe with Diet Coke

An American YouTuber, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, was arrested after allegedly visiting North Sentinel Island, which is home to the uncontacted Sentinelese tribe, and leaving behind a can of Diet Coke as an ‘offering.’ Polyakov, 25, was detained in March 2025, shortly after he reportedly spent about an hour on the island filming his actions and attempting to attract the tribe’s attention. His visit violated strict Indian laws prohibiting access to the island, which is considered a protected tribal reserve. He has been denied bail and could face up to five years in prison if convicted. Polyakov had previously attempted to reach the island on two occasions and conducted research on its accessibility.

Why It Matters

The Sentinelese tribe has lived on North Sentinel Island for approximately 60,000 years, maintaining a lifestyle that is entirely isolated from modern civilization. Indian law is designed to protect their indigenous way of life by prohibiting contact with outsiders, as any interaction can pose significant health risks to the tribe, who lack immunity to common diseases. Past attempts to contact the Sentinelese have often resulted in violent encounters, highlighting the critical importance of respecting their autonomy. The situation underscores ongoing debates about the rights of indigenous peoples and the ethical responsibilities of individuals engaging with isolated cultures.
