Mahatma Gandhi Settlement

Founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904, the Mahatma Gandhi Settlement was at the forefront of South Africa’s struggle for justice. It is also known as the Phoenix Settlement and is part of various other attractions along what is known as the ‘Inanda Route’. A visit to this site will enrich your knowledge of Mahatma Gandhi. Empangeni Art and Cultural History Museum

Located only an hour and thirty minutes from Durban, the Empangeni Art and Cultural History Museum was founded in 1916 by sugar farmers. It exists to study, preserve, and collect objects which are of cultural, historic, or artistic value.

This building has been used by sugar farmers for meetings, weddings, concerts, and other events. It is truly the meeting place of the region’s diverse cultures. At the museum, one can find various works by renowned artists such as Andries Botha, Gert Swart, and Bonnie Ntshali. There are also temporary displays which are held on a regular basis. This is where the public can view the diversity and creativity which exist in the region.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

The Nelson Mandela Capture Site holds enormous significance for the country of South Africa. It is where struggle icon Nelson Mandela was arrested on the 5th of August 1962.

The site is operated by the Apartheid Museum and serves to commemorate Mandela’s arrest, as well as his life spent behind bars. A visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site is interesting and insightful, providing the necessary information on South Africa’s past.

Dingaan’s Royal Kraal

Dingaan’s Kraal is situated in the Babanango district in Umgungundlovu. This site pays homage to former Zulu King Dingaan whose kingdom lasted from 1828 to 1840.

He was forced to flee to the Lebombo mountains where he was murdered by a group of warriors who were of Swazi Nyawo origin. By visiting the historic site, you will get more insight into the king’s life and the period in which he ruled.
