Tom Holland confirms Sony’s plan to include Venom and Morbius in the MCU

There was a time when Sony’s Spider-Man universe appeared to be on a collision course with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), particularly with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man potentially crossing paths with Tom Hardy’s Venom. Tom Holland recently confirmed that there were legitimate plans by Sony to merge its Spider-Man universe with the MCU, a concept that was actively developed but ultimately never came to fruition. Following a groundbreaking agreement in 2015 that allowed Spider-Man to be integrated into the MCU while Sony retained rights to its broader Spider-Man character library, Sony launched its own interconnected universe, starting with the successful Venom in 2018. However, subsequent releases like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter faced disappointing box office results, leading Sony to abandon its shared universe ambitions. Despite these setbacks, the animated Spider-Verse films continue to thrive, with the final installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set to premiere next year.

Why It Matters

The planned crossover between Sony’s Spider-Man universe and the MCU highlights the complexities of franchise management in Hollywood. Sony’s initial success with Venom set high expectations for a larger interconnected universe, but the failure of later films indicated challenges in maintaining audience interest. The 2015 agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios was pivotal in allowing Spider-Man to appear in the MCU, influencing the direction of superhero films in the years that followed. With Marvel Studios now planning to introduce a live-action Miles Morales, the narrative shift may redefine how Spider-Man-related characters are integrated into the broader cinematic landscape, further illustrating the evolving dynamics between studios in the superhero genre.
