Timberwolves’ Steve Senior declines Lakers position

The Los Angeles Lakers are undergoing a front office overhaul following the majority purchase by Mark Walter. Inspired by the structure of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office, which Walter has owned since 2012, the Lakers have appointed Lon Rosen as their new president of business operations and are utilizing the advisory expertise of Dodgers executives Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi. The Lakers are currently seeking to fill two assistant general manager positions to support general manager Rob Pelinka. Recently, the team extended an offer to Steve Senior, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ assistant general manager, for the role of executive vice president of basketball operations, but he declined to stay with the Timberwolves, where he has contributed to the team’s success in player development, helping them achieve consecutive Western Conference finals appearances in 2024 and 2025. Under new head coach JJ Redick, the Lakers are focusing on developing their young talent across both their NBA and G League rosters.

Why It Matters

The Lakers’ front office changes reflect a strategic shift aimed at enhancing organizational performance, mirroring the successful practices of the Dodgers. This approach comes as the franchise seeks to revitalize its competitive standing after recent struggles. The Lakers’ emphasis on player development is critical, especially given their historical commitment to building championship-caliber teams through nurturing talent. The decision by Steve Senior to remain with the Timberwolves underscores the competitive landscape of NBA front offices, where experienced personnel can significantly influence team success.
