About 59% of TikTok videos shown on a new user’s For You feed are classified as AI-generated content, often referred to as “AI slop,” according to a report by Kapwing, a video creation tool company. This percentage is approximately three times higher than the 21% of AI-generated content found in YouTube Shorts during a similar study. Kapwing analyzed over 10,000 TikTok videos across 20 categories and conducted a test on new accounts, revealing that 294 out of the first 500 videos viewed were AI-generated. The Kids category had the highest rate of AI slop at 57%, with tags like #cartoonkids showing an alarming 97% of videos as AI-generated. Other categories such as Science and Education, Health, and History followed with lower but significant rates, while areas emphasizing personal presence, like Fashion, Music, and Fitness, showed minimal AI content.
Why It Matters
The prevalence of AI-generated content on platforms like TikTok raises concerns about the authenticity and quality of online media. As of last November, TikTok had already identified 1.3 billion videos as AI-generated, highlighting a significant trend in content creation. The disparity between TikTok and YouTube in AI content underscores the challenges both platforms face in ensuring diverse and engaging user experiences. With the rise of AI in content production, understanding its impact on viewer engagement and content integrity has become increasingly important for users, creators, and platform operators alike.
