Ex-husband of TikTok influencer aims to block alleged killer’s estate claims

The ex-husband of TikTok influencer Sara Gilson has filed a lawsuit to prevent her estranged husband, Jeremiah Shawn Duffey, from inheriting her estate following her death in an apparent murder-suicide. Lyle Landers claims Gilson died without a will, leaving behind personal property in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Duffey, 48, allegedly shot Gilson, 43, after she had publicly accused him of pedophilia days before her death. In the court filing, Landers invoked Oklahoma’s “slayer statute,” which bars individuals who commit homicide from benefiting from the victim’s estate. Landers also expressed his intent to serve as the estate’s administrator to protect the interests of their two minor children. Gilson had previously sought multiple protection orders against Duffey, citing a history of abuse, and he had been accused of child molestation shortly before the tragic incident.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the complexities surrounding domestic violence and inheritance laws. The “slayer statute” is designed to prevent perpetrators from profiting from their crimes, reflecting legal principles that seek to uphold justice for victims. Gilson’s history of seeking protection orders underscores the challenges many face in escaping abusive relationships, a significant public health issue. The ongoing investigation into the circumstances of her death further emphasizes the need for awareness and intervention in domestic violence situations, as well as the legal ramifications that follow such tragedies.
