EU warns TikTok that minor protection measures should not be opt-in

TikTok is facing scrutiny from the European Union regarding its measures to protect child users on the platform. The European Commission has released preliminary findings under the Digital Services Act (DSA), highlighting concerns that TikTok should modify the default settings for minors’ public accounts. Specifically, it suggests that content posted by minors should only be visible to selected users and not recommended to others in the For You feed. The Commission warns that failure to address these issues could result in a non-compliance decision, leading to fines of up to 6% of TikTok’s global annual revenue. This announcement follows a similar investigation by the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, which is also assessing TikTok’s child safety practices.

Why It Matters

The scrutiny of TikTok’s child safety measures underscores the growing regulatory focus on digital platforms and their responsibilities toward young users. The Digital Services Act aims to enforce stricter regulations on tech companies to ensure safer online environments, particularly for minors. This initiative is part of a broader trend in Europe, where regulators are increasingly scrutinizing social media platforms for their impact on youth, especially concerning issues like privacy and mental health. As concerns over children’s safety online continue to escalate, the outcomes of these investigations may lead to significant changes in how platforms like TikTok operate.
