A survey by the Principals’ and Deputy Principals’ Association found that 75% of secondary schools have advertised teaching vacancies with no applications, with 64% attributing vacancies to recruitment or retention issues. Schools struggle to hire teachers for subjects like maths, Irish, and French, leading to staff shortages and subjects being dropped. The Teachers’ Union of Ireland is calling for more support from the government to attract and retain teachers, as schools face logistical challenges and limits on student access to certain subjects due to teacher shortages.
