Hundreds of women, children, and doctors are being held in poor conditions by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in el-Fasher, Sudan, according to the Sudan Doctors Network. Around 20 doctors, over 1,470 civilians, and 907 military personnel are reportedly detained in dire circumstances in various facilities in the city. The RSF, accused of committing crimes against humanity during the conflict in Darfur, took control of el-Fasher in October, leading to a deterioration in humanitarian and health conditions.
Why It Matters
The ongoing detention of women, children, and medical professionals in poor conditions by the RSF in Sudan highlights the severe violations and abuses faced by captives in the region. The conflict, now in its third year, has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with reports of ethnically motivated killings and a cholera outbreak in detention centers. The capture of doctors has further weakened the already struggling health sector, emphasizing the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the deteriorating situation in Darfur.
