Thousands in Nepal want monarchy back as public frustration with politics grows

Supporters of Nepal’s former king, Gyanendra Shah, gathered in Kathmandu to demand the reinstatement of the monarchy and the designation of Hinduism as the state religion, with 10,000 people blocking the airport entrance upon his return. Despite being ousted in 2006, many Nepalis are disillusioned with the current republic, citing political instability, economic struggles, and corruption, leading to growing support for the ex-king. Gyanendra, who ruled briefly as an absolute monarch, has not responded to the calls for his return, although his chances of regaining power remain slim due to the political landscape.
