Developers of Golden Dome’s orbital interceptors under current regulations

The US Space Force has announced a list of twelve companies involved in the development of Space-Based Interceptors (SBI) for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative. This multilayer defense system is designed to protect US territory from various aerial threats, including drones and ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles. Among the contractors are prominent defense and technology firms such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and SpaceX, alongside others like Anduril Industries and Booz Allen Hamilton. The Space Force awarded 20 contracts to these companies between late 2025 and early 2026 through Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements, allowing for a more flexible approach to contracting and rapid prototyping, which is crucial for the initial phase of the SBI program.

Why It Matters

The Golden Dome initiative aims to enhance national security in response to evolving threats in the aerial domain, particularly from adversaries capable of using advanced missile technologies. The use of OTA agreements signifies a shift towards more agile procurement processes, enabling quicker development and deployment of critical defense systems. Historically, the US military has prioritized rapid innovation in response to emerging threats, as seen in previous initiatives like the Missile Defense Agency’s programs. As global tensions rise, the capacity to defend against a diverse range of aerial threats becomes increasingly vital for maintaining national defense and security.
