Bentley organized flights from Washington, DC, to Monterey, California, to facilitate a test drive of its new Supersports model and a ride in a preproduction Torcal EV. During the event at Laguna Seca, attendees had the opportunity to experience the historic Bentley Super Sports, a model that originally debuted between 1925 and 1927. The modern Supersports is noted for being the most driver-focused Bentley in recent history, featuring a rear-wheel-drive layout and a lighter build. The original Super Sports was an upgraded version of the standard 3 Litre model, boasting enhancements like a shorter wheelbase, improved aerodynamics, and a more powerful engine. Bentley produced only 18 units of the original model, which could exceed speeds of 100 mph, a remarkable feat compared to contemporary vehicles of its time.

Why It Matters

The Bentley Super Sports represents a significant milestone in automotive history, showcasing the evolution of performance standards in luxury vehicles. The original model was one of the earliest examples of a specialized sports car, emphasizing speed and handling, a trend that continues with the modern Supersports. The shift from a hybrid system to a more traditional rear-wheel-drive layout in the latest iteration reflects changing consumer preferences for driver engagement in high-performance automobiles. By connecting past innovations with contemporary engineering, Bentley highlights its legacy in sports car manufacturing while appealing to a new generation of enthusiasts.
