At least 30 people have died in Japan due to severe snowfall over the past two weeks, with the highest fatalities in Niigata prefecture. Many victims were clearing snow, prompting Aomori to request military assistance for snow removal, particularly for vulnerable elderly residents. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has directed ministers to take urgent measures to prevent further fatalities. Meteorological authorities anticipate a slight rise in temperatures but expect more snow to return soon.
